A dark Western set in Northern Quebec, SPIRIT LAKE tells the story of four political prisoners who escape from a brutal internment camp, only to find themselves caught between the perils of the Canadian wilderness and the savagery of vigilante justice.
Set during the First World War, the story is inspired by true events. At that time, immigrants who were born within the borders of the Austro-Hungarian Empire were deemed “enemy aliens” by Canadian law. Thousands of men, most of them Ukrainian, were arrested and interned in camps located at remote locations across the country. Some remained imprisoned until well after the war was over.
